The national launch of Sabah-based Warisan today saw the party formalising its 15th general election alliance with the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda).
Speaking to reporters after the launch, Warisan president Shafie Apdal said no decisions have been made so far with regard to cooperation with other parties.
"For now our cooperation is with Muda. The rest we have not decided yet," Shafie said at a joint press conference with Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.
"This is the choice we are providing to the people. We are making sure to strengthen our own house first, before looking at others.
"It doesn't mean our doors are closed. In politics, anything can happen," said Shafie.
Asked whether Warisan will be willing to work with Bersatu-splinter Pejuang, Shafie said their doors are open to parties with shared values.
Right values
He also stressed their considerations for political cooperation must be made based on the right values, including being consistent and honest in their stand.
Quizzed on Warisan's expansion plans, the veteran politician said they have taken a pragmatic approach based on his personal experience with peninsular politics.
"We cannot assume we will contest in all seats. We have to be pragmatic.
"This will also be discussed with the Muda president," he said, adding Warisan has yet to set up its divisional structure or appoint any state liaisons.
Meanwhile, Shafie declined to comment when asked to confirm rumours that former DAP Teratai assemblyperson Bryan Lai Wai Chong, who was seen during the launch, has officially joined Warisan.
"Today is the launch of the party.
"We will announce which YB has joined later. It is not yet time to announce them," he said.
When pressed further, Shafie said, "The timing must be right. When you are hungry then you eat. (But) you don't eat dinner during breakfast." - Mkini
