Taman Melawati residents fume over stalled sewerage upgrades

Taman Melawati residents are fuming over stalled sewerage upgrades which they claim have dragged on for the past four years.

According to Taman Melawati Residents’ Association (TMRA) chairperson Azhari Abd Taharim, the non-completion of the work is causing inconvenience and posing a hazard to the local community.

"We are extremely disappointed to witness the never-ending episode of stalled and non-progressive sewerage upgrading work, resulting in the abysmal road conditions which are dangerous for motorists and pedestrians alike.

"In fact, the condition of the road has caused crashes and has been damaging the residents’ vehicles for quite a while," he claimed in a statement today.

He said that the sewerage project is being undertaken by Puncak Niaga Construction Sdn Bhd as the project consultant which was initiated by the then Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry (KETTHA).

Currently, the project is being implemented by the Sewerage Services Department (JPP) under the purview of the Environment and Water Ministry, he said.

"This public infrastructure project was expected to be completed by Puncak Niaga in 2018 and it is now long overdue as 2021 is nearly over.

"Over the years, Taman Melawati residents have had to put up with repeated empty promises by Puncak Niaga and JPP. The relevant authorities appear not to be serious about resolving this massive problem," he added.

Azhari said that while there have been three different federal government administrations involved, nothing has been solved and no one is showing a clear commitment to complete the poorly executed project.

He called on Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man to intervene and put an end to the uncertainty of the stalled sewerage project.

"Although new dates have been given to complete the project, we are not convinced that it will materialise. We demand Puncak Niaga to adhere to the deadline and complete the job at all existing sites," he said.

The association also called for the dismantling of hoardings and to repair potholes thus making it safe for driving.

They also demanded a detailed timeline of the project until completion according to the latest deadline, as well as a detailed progress report from Puncak Niaga immediately after every progress meeting.
