Covid-19 deaths (Dec 12): 31 reported fatalities, total at 30,862

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported a total of 31 new Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Dec 11), bringing the cumulative death toll to 30,862.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 933 deaths per 1 million population.

From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 22.6 percent or seven died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.

Selangor recorded the highest number of new deaths at 10 victims (32.3 percent).

Other states with a significant number of newly reported deaths include Sabah (7).

The remaining deaths were in Perak (4), Sarawak (4), Kuala Lumpur (2), Kedah (1), Pahang (1), Penang (1) and Terengganu (1).

No new deaths were reported in Johor, Kelantan, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Perlis, Labuan and Putrajaya.

A total of 24 out of the 31 reported deaths or 77.4 percent happened in the last seven days.

The remaining deaths happened more than a week ago but were only recorded yesterday due to delays in data reporting.

An average of 44 Covid-19 deaths was reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 41, indicating a downtrend.

To date, 548 Covid-19 deaths have been reported this month.

As of yesterday, there were 60,778 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 3 percent from the 62,670 active infections a week ago.

Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 4.8 percent from 63,829.

The Health Ministry's post-midnight update also provided further insights into the new Covid-19 infections.

From the 4,626 new cases yesterday, a total of 105 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.

From the cluster-linked cases, 76 (72.4 percent) were from workplaces while 18 (17.1 percent) were from education institutions.

The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to high-risk groups such as old folks homes (6-5.7 percent) and community transmissions (5-4.8 percent).
