Covid-19 deaths (Dec 17): Total fatalities crosses 31k ( 37 deaths yesterday)

 


COVID-19 | The Covid-19 death toll has crossed the 31,000 mark after another 37 people died from the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The new fatalities reported by the Health Ministry yesterday put the cumulative death toll at 31,026.

Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 939 deaths per 1 million population.

From the newly reported deaths yesterday, 10.8 percent or four died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.

Penang recorded the highest number of new deaths at six, making up 16.2 percent of the newly reported fatalities.

The remaining deaths were in Johor (4), Kedah (4), Perak (4), Terengganu (4), Negeri Sembilan (3), Pahang (3), Selangor (3), Sabah (2), Kuala Lumpur (2), Kelantan (1) and Malacca (1).

No new deaths were reported in Perlis, Sarawak, Labuan and Putrajaya.

A total of 35 out of the 37 reported deaths or 94.6 percent happened in the last seven days.

The remaining deaths happened more than a week ago but were only recorded yesterday due to delays in data reporting.

An average of 42 Covid-19 deaths was reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 34, indicating a downward trend.

To date, 712 Covid-19 deaths have been reported this month.

A total of 1,612 Covid-19 deaths were reported in November, 2,704 in October, 9,678 in September and 7,642 in August.

As of yesterday, there were 56,229 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 7.6 percent from the 60,856 active infections a week ago.

Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 13.9 percent from 65,318.

Cluster-linked infections

From the 4,262 new cases yesterday, a total of 125 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.

From the cluster-linked cases, 88 (70.4 percent) were from workplaces while 19 (15.2 percent) were from education institutions.

The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to community transmissions (15 - 12.0 percent), imported (2 - 1.6 percent) and high-risk groups such as old folks homes (1 - 0.8 percent).
