Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has urged people to be on alert for SMS or MySejahtera notifications in order not to miss their Covid-19 booster dose appointments.
In addition, he said people should reply by indicating whether they want to receive the booster dose on the appointed time and date.
“If the appointment date is missed, it is recommended to go to the nearest vaccination centre to register to be on a waiting list,” he said in a statement today.
He said the government has been notifying people about their booster dose appointments through SMS and MySejahtera app notifications to facilitate the rollout for booster doses.
As of yesterday, a total of 3,944,858 booster doses have been administered.
All fully vaccinated adults above 18 years old are eligible, the doses are being prioritised for certain groups, such as people above 40 years old, people above 18 years old with comorbidities, and residents and staff of long-term care facilities.
Pregnant women and people who require booster shots for overseas travel are also prioritised.
The Health Ministry originally rolled out booster shots in response to waning vaccine immunity over time, as cases begin to grow once more, and hospitals fill with Covid-19 patients.
While Covid-19 hospitalisations are now back on a steady decline for a month now, the booster campaign has gained a renewed urgency following the discovery of the Omicron variant of the virus in late November.
Preliminary data - now available for Pfizer, Sinovac, AstraZeneca and other vaccines - suggests that two doses of the vaccines would not provide adequate protection against an Omicron variant infection, though protection against serious illness is still unclear.
Early data, including a real-world study in the UK, also suggest a booster dose can substantially restore vaccine protection against the variant. - Mkini
