PETALING JAYA: The lawyer for a wanted criminal known as “Long Tiger”, who escaped from custody, has claimed his client’s life was under threat in the lock-up.
In a statement, lawyer Shaharudin Ali claimed that police reports had been lodged about attempts to injure Long Tiger, whose real name is Abd Hamim Ab Hamid.
“These attempts to harm Hamim are not new. The Muar High Court judge was briefed about these attempts, and statements from lawyers and the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) have been recorded,” Shaharudin said.
He also expressed concern that Hamim’s mental health might have worsened due to numerous attempts to injure him.
“That might have forced him to escape.”
However, he did not deny his client’s wrongdoing in escaping custody.
“Escaping from a magistrates’ court lockup is an offence. The DPP has asked that an arrest warrant be issued for Hamim and his bail money be confiscated.
“We (Hamim’s defence team) have complied with the DPP’s request.”
Hamim, a Rohingya, escaped from the magistrates’ court lock-up in Tangkak district in Johor two days ago and is currently the subject of a manhunt by the district police.
He is wanted for rape, kidnap and blackmail. - FMT
