In flood aftermath, veteran scribe hits out at 'D Class' minister

Veteran journalist A Kadir Jasin has taken a swipe at a “D Class” minister for saying that Malaysia is not vulnerable to climate change, following record-high rainfall and flooding over the weekend in Klang Valley and six other states.

Kadir did not mention the minister by name but made obvious references to Environment and Water Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man's statement initially made to explain the reasons for Malaysia not being invited to the Leaders' Summit on Climate in the United States on April 22 and 23.

"It seems like he did not read, wrongly read or he was played out by his officers.

"It would be worse if officers advising the minister are also ‘D Class’. During my time in school, D is a fail grade, not a short form for 'Distinction'," he said.

Kadir also took aim at the media, which he claimed has failed to question the minister at the time, as well as now failing to explain the reasons behind the floods that have displaced more than 30,000 people.

Just in the Klang Valley, Kadir cited topography data showing its natural position that is already prone to floods, further impacted by rising global seawater levels due to climate change.

"So let us not take this issue (climate change) lightly. Appoint a minister who is more informed and convincing; a minister capable of communicating with the outside world.

"Not a 'D Class' minister or a minister who is just there to support the prime minister," Kadir added. - Mkini
