Introduce motion on BNM’s RM2.07bil land purchase from govt, says Kit Siang

The Public Accounts Committee says in a report that Bank Negara Malaysia ‘overpaid’ for a piece of government land it did not plan to buy to repay 1MDB debts.

PETALING JAYA: DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang has urged the government to introduce a motion on Bank Negara Malaysia’s (BNM) purchase of a piece of government land to repay 1MDB debts.

Lim, the Iskandar Puteri MP, said the government should prove that it was committed to the United Nations’ anti-corruption efforts by introducing a motion to approve the Public Accounts Committee’s (PAC) report on the matter.

The PAC said in its report on Dec 13 that BNM “overpaid” for a piece of government land it did not plan to buy.

It said the RM2.07 billion proceeds from the purchase of the land, known as Lot 41, went towards repaying 1MDB debts.

In a statement today, Lim noted that law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had said that Malaysia would support the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) and had undertaken several efforts that proved its seriousness in the matter.

He said Wan Junaidi had cited such efforts as the seizure of part of the assets confiscated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in the 1MDB scandal amounting to RM5 billion as well as the implementation of the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP) 2019-2023 through the National Centre for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption Centre (GIACC).

“To walk the talk, I call on Wan Junaidi to introduce a motion in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday to adopt the PAC’s report confirming suspicion that Bank Negara funds were used for 1MDB bailout,” he said. - FMT
