Many residents stranded by floods in Taman Sri Muda still not getting help

As night fell, many residents in the Taman Sri Muda area in Shah Alam stranded by flash floods say they have yet to receive help.

Instead, they have turned to volunteers, sending out appeals in residents groups on social media.

The appeals include calling for food and baby formula, asking for medication for the elderly or asking for someone to check in on home-alone children as their parents are stranded away from home.

Many have also said that their mobile phone battery was dangerously low, and they may not be able to communicate soon.

Resident groups have been coordinating efforts to collect home addresses and GPS locations in order to reach those in need of help.

However, some volunteers say they are having trouble moving around in the dark over flood water.

"It's getting dark, many have WhatsApp me but help has yet to arrive," said a woman who runs a cat shelter.

"I need to transfer my cats to our shelter at a shop lot 1km away... please only contact us if you are able to help as my phone battery is low.

"We've not eaten since yesterday. I also don't know if my daughter who is at the shelter has food," she said.

"Please help! No food and electricity. My staff have been stranded for two days," said another resident.

Some residents who have been liaising for those stranded shared that they have lost contact as there was no electricity to charge their phones.

Residents have also set up a boat rescue unit and started a Google sheet form to collect information for those who are still stranded.

All the addresses shared in the resident and rescue groups are in Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam.

While floodwaters in most areas have receded, parts of Taman Sri Muda are still inundated.

Taman Sri Muda is surrounded by the Klang river which had overflowed due to sustained rain brought about by Tropical Depression 29W. - Mkini
