KUALA LUMPUR: The disaster recovery network of government-linked companies has allocated a total of RM50 million for flood relief, half of which is a matching grant from the government.

The Employees Provident Fund said it is allocating a sum of RM10 million in flood relief and welfare aid which will be channelled through non-governmental organisations and in collaboration with the disaster network.

The rural development ministry has allocated RM4 million in immediate assistance in the form of food baskets to flood victims in several states, the minister, Mahdzir Khalid said.

Volunteers from the Community Development Department will be mobilised immediately to assist flood victims. “What is important is to repair damaged bridges or homes after the floods recede,” he added.

Telekom Malaysia’s group chief executive officer, Imri Mokhtar, said the disaster network was collaborating with the National Security Council through the national disaster management agency and others in disaster relief.

TM is joint chair of the network secretariat.

Imri some telecommunications services provided by TM have been affected by the floods and some equipment particularly in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang had been damaged. TM also shut down power supply and network equipment in some areas as a precautionary measure.

The EPF said in a statement that it was offering the use of its learning campus in Bangi, which has 152 rooms with full amenities, to displaced people and the emergency services.

EPF employees are also raising funds to help flood victims, Bernama reported. - FMT
