Ambiga calls all lawyers to join walk for judiciary independence

Former Malaysian Bar president Ambiga Sreenevasan has once again urged all lawyers to attend the “Walk for the Independence of the Judiciary” happening this Friday (June 17) in Kuala Lumpur.

This comes amid allegations earlier last month of judicial intimidation.

“Calling all lawyers! Get ready for one of the most important walks of your career.

“The Walk for the Independence of the Judiciary this Friday (June 17) at 10am, Padang Merbok! Retweet please!” Ambiga said on her Twitter today.

Back at the beginning of May, a group of former Bar presidents including Ambiga had pushed for another “Walk for Justice”.

They had started an online petition calling on the Bar Council to organise a walk to send a clear message to those who “seek to interfere” in the judiciary.

Aside from Ambiga, the other organisers of the petition are fellow former Malaysian Bar presidents Mah Weng Kwai, Kuthubul Zaman Bukhari, Yeo Yang Poh, Lim Chee Wee and Steven Thiru.

Gone overboard

Towards the end of April, Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat said criticisms of the judiciary had gone overboard.

This was after the MACC started investigations on Court of Appeal judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali due to a post from a politically-linked blog claiming he had unexplained wealth.

Nazlan, when serving as a high court judge, had convicted ex-prime minister Najib Abdul Razak of corruption, money laundering and abuse of power.

In 2007, some 2,000 lawyers under the leadership of the Bar Council’s then chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan, marched against allegations of judicial interference.

This was after an audio recording was leaked, showing now-disbarred lawyer VK Lingam boasting about influencing the appointment of judges.

A royal commission of inquiry confirmed the authenticity of the recording and put a spotlight on past questionable judgments.

The scandal eventually led to the creation of the Judicial Appointments Commission. - Mkini
