I’m willing to take pay cut for the people, says Wan Fayhsal

Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said similar pay cuts should also be imposed on the heads of government-linked companies and statutory bodies.

KUALA LUMPUR: Bersatu Youth chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal agrees with calls for members of the Cabinet and their deputies to take a pay cut amid the rising cost of living faced by Malaysians.

Wan Fayhsal, the deputy national unity minister, said similar pay cuts should also be imposed on the heads of government-linked companies (GLCs) and statutory bodies.

The Dewan Negara senator said the funds from these pay cuts should then be channelled back to the people to aid them amid the recent rise in the cost of living.

“We are willing to (face pay cuts) for the rakyat. It should be between a 10% and 20% pay cut,” he told a press conference at Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) headquarters.

Wan Fayhsal also said he agreed with slashing allocations for ministers’ and deputies’ overseas trips.

Earlier today, some 20 student groups warned the government that they would take to the streets if it failed to address the rising cost of living.

They had also called for salary cuts for ministers and their deputies as well as additional aid for the people.

Meanwhile, Wan Fayhsal said Bersatu Youth was against retracting subsidies in a hasty manner. He said there should be thorough study on its impact on vulnerable groups, especially with the nation still recovering from the effects of the pandemic.

“The rushed removal of subsidies will add burden to the B40 and M40 (communities) in the country.

“Bersatu Youth would like to suggest that the government strictly enforce the relevant laws to ensure the prices of goods do not balloon while remaining fair to businessmen.

“If necessary, the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 should be amended in Parliament as soon as possible, in order to provide more enforcement instruments to the authorities,” he added. - FMT
