‘Disappointed’ PH to meet with PM over delayed anti-hopping bill

PETALING JAYA: A “disappointed” Pakatan Harapan (PH) presidential council says it is seeking a meeting with Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob over the delay in tabling the anti-hopping bill.

The Parliamentary Special Select Committee had proposed that the bill be tabled at a one-day special sitting in early July, as opposed to waiting for the scheduled Dewan Rakyat meeting from July 18 to Aug 4.

However, Ismail said last week there was no need to hold a special sitting to table and debate the bill. He cited the high costs and potential absence of some MPs, with two special select committees going abroad for programmes organised by Parliament from early July until the middle of the month.

“The Pakatan Harapan presidential council is disappointed with the government’s failure to convene a special sitting of the Dewan Rakyat, specifically to table the anti-hopping bill,” it said in a statement today.

“Despite that, Pakatan Harapan hopes that the bill will be tabled, debated and approved in the first week of the next meeting of Parliament, which starts on July 18.

“Pakatan Harapan’s main leaders will hold an immediate meeting with the prime minister to discuss the anti-hopping bill and other matters.”

The other matters pertain to the three remaining items in the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between PH and the federal government last September.

They are the setting of a limit of two terms or 10 years for the post of prime minister, the tabling of the Parliamentary Services Bill, and the amendment to the Dewan Rakyat’s Standing Orders.

The statement was signed by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook and Upko president Madius Tangau. - FMT
