Enough of perpetual 'under study' flood solutions, MP tells minister

The government should stop promising solutions to the flooding problem in Kuala Lumpur that is perpetually "under study", said Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng.

This was after Federal Territories Minister Shahidan Kassim said a feasibility study was being conducted to build a high capacity underground flood water storage tunnel to overcome the issue of flash floods.

"Before this, the government had promised various solutions to solve the people's problems, but until today, the solutions remain just a proposal that is perpetually 'under study'," Lim said.

The Kepong MP said the government had already been urged not to allow development projects near retention ponds, but they fell on deaf ears.

Shahidan had confirmed development projects near two retention ponds in the capital but maintained that they were only "at the edge".

Lim said the latest proposed underground flood water storage tunnel project has also not seen consultation with local residents and stakeholders.

"The Federal Territories minister is urged to communicate through town hall sessions with Kuala Lumpur residents and other stakeholders.

"Communication is important not only to identify the flooding problems but also specific issues involving all stakeholders.

"The culture of coming up with plans from air-conditioned rooms must stop," he said.

Lim said Shahidan should also disclose the budget for the proposed project and whether there would be an open tender. - Mkini
