Umno Supreme Council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi has blasted the party's former secretary-general, Annuar Musa, for rejecting calls for the general election to be expedited because he thinks the current government was in a stable situation.
Puad said that Annuar, who is also the communications and multimedia minister, should not underestimate the wisdom of the people in opting for a stable government.
"Annuar cannot underestimate the wisdom of the people who chose a stable government in the Malacca, Sarawak and Johor state elections.
"Everyone, including foreign investors, knows that the central government today is one with a weak majority. It can be threatened, tied up, oppressed, disrespected and abandoned at any time.
"Just look at the case of Zuraida Kamaruddin. When she left Bersatu, many parties demanded that her ministerial post should be vacated as it belonged to their party.
"This does not include pressure from those who want the deputy prime minister post," he told Malaysiakini.
Yesterday, Annuar was reported to have said that the government led by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob was a stable government with the support of all parties, including the opposition.
Therefore, he said there was no urgent need at this time to dissolve parliament to enable the 15th general election to be held.
"The question of dissolution if we look at the previous general election is not based on insistence.
“The cabinet has to make a decision if it feels like it can get a mandate and it feels like there is enough time to dissolve, the cabinet and the prime minister can only advise but it’s the Yang di-Pertuan Agong who has absolute power.
"This government will uphold Yang di-Pertuan Agong's command for less politicking and more governance,” he said.
Delay GE instead of politicking?
Commenting further, Puad said Annuar should not make interpretations according to his taste regarding the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's command on politicking.
"If Umno grassroots' demand for the general election to be expedited is considered politicking, then why the delay? Even making your own interpretation of the Agong's order can also be considered politicking.
"Annuar is very proud of the government-Pakatan Harapan memorandum of understanding (MOU). But the government's failure to get Dewan Rakyat's approval for Subsection 4 (5) of the Security Offenses (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) has proven that the MOU was fragile.
"Those who want the general election to be delayed are those who are afraid of not being re-nominated and are afraid of losing their posts too soon.
"So, who are the real cowards?" asked Puad. - Mkini
