I gave Guan Eng luxury watch for birthday, says company director

Lim Guan Eng looked happy when he accepted a Maurice Lacroix watch, star witness Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli told his corruption trial.

KUALA LUMPUR: The star witness in Lim Guan Eng’s Penang undersea tunnel project corruption trial told the sessions court today he gave a Swiss-made luxury watch to the then chief minister for his birthday to ensure that the RM6.3 billion project would proceed smoothly.

Consortium Zenith BUCG Sdn Bhd director Zarul Ahmad Mohd Zulkifli said he met Lim at Komtar some time in December 2015 to give him the Maurice Lacroix watch as well as RM100,000 cash kept in an envelope.

“However, he only took the watch and returned the envelope,” he said. “He looked happy when he received the watch.”

A former watch broker, K Rajen Gunaretnam, had told the hearing in September last year he sold a Maurice Lacroix watch to Zarul for RM40,000 some time in 2015.

Zarul also said he gave Lim RM100,000 on his birthday a year earlier. He said he passed the cash, kept in an envelope, to Lim at Komtar.

Yesterday, he had told the court he gave Lim another RM200,000 – in August 2013 and January 2014 – to “fulfil” part of his promise to give him a 10% cut of the project’s profits.

Lim is on trial on charges of using his position to ask Zarul for a 10% cut of the profits from the undersea tunnel project, and accepting RM3.3 million in kickbacks from the businessman.

He is also accused of two counts of dishonestly misappropriating RM208.7 million worth of state land to two companies.

The hearing before judge Azura Alwi continues on June 27. - FMT
