Isham gets appointed to replace Tajuddin on Umno supreme council

Former Selangor BN information chief Isham Jalil has been appointed as an Umno supreme council member, replacing the recently sacked Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.

Isham, 46, holds a degree in public policy from Harvard University.

Earlier, supreme council member Puad Zarkashi uploaded a picture of Isham at the Umno supreme council meeting in Kuala Lumpur tonight, along with a congratulatory message.

When asked after the meeting whether Isham’s appointment will help the party, Puad told reporters Umno needs people with “brains”.

“Yes, we need more of those who have brains in the party,” the Rengit assemblyperson said.

On whether there will be other supreme council members who will be removed from office, Puad said the matter would not arise if party members toed the line.

“Whoever doesn’t follow the party line ought to be punished, since all organisations need members who are disciplined and will abide by party decisions.

“So, it doesn’t matter who it is. The question of whether there will be more does not arise, what is important is - if everyone obeys the party there will be no issues,” he added.

Criticism not the problem

Earlier, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced Tajuddin’s removal from the supreme council for going against party decisions.

Puad said criticising the party president is not an issue.

"I criticised the president too… it’s not a problem, but let it be correct.

“Where things have already been decided, we follow. On the matter of criticism, anyone can criticise, so what is the problem?

“I too criticised (the president)… I even criticised the prime minister,” he added.

As for tonight’s meeting, Puad said it mainly discussed the general election and disciplinary action against supreme council members.

It’s the economy

Meanwhile, Isham said his main agenda is to focus on the issue of cost of living and the nation’s post-pandemic economic recovery.

His appointment serves as motivation to work harder for the party, he said.

“The economic issue (is priority) because it not only affects the party but everyone, especially since the whole world is affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are part of the government… so we will work with the government our prime minister today is from Umno. That makes it easier to find solutions to our problems,” he told reporters after the meeting. - Mkini
