LRT escalator fixed day after questions on 'clothing' contractor raised

An escalator at an LRT station, which has been broken for years, was suddenly repaired, a day after criticism over it went viral on social media.

On Tuesday, Muda Federal Territories chairperson Taufiq Zarak took to social media to question why the escalator at the Sri Rampai LRT station was still not fixed even though contractor Bossque Skyline Sdn Bhd was supposed to complete it in April.

He also questioned why Bossque Skyline was contracted when it was registered as a clothing company with the Companies Commission of Malaysia.

Shortly after, DBKL released a statement today, reporting that the escalators at the station’s flyover have been operational since yesterday (June 15).

According to a Sinar Harian report in November 2021, DBKL said repair works for the escalators - which were alleged to have been faulty for roughly five years - would commence in December 2021 and would be completed in March 2022.

Taufiq noted that the completion date for the repairs have been pushed back to April 4, 2022, when he visited the site on June 13 (Monday).

Bossque Skyline - a clothing company?

DBKL said an open tender to bumiputera contractors for the maintenance works was opened on April 2 and closed on April 15.

Following the open tender period, the city hall conducted an evaluation of the participating tenderers.

“Messrs Bossque Skyline Sdn Bhd passed all the evaluation stages carried out by the bid evaluation committee.

“The company was selected based on a reasonable price offer and adequate financial position through a quotation committee,” said DBKL.

According to DBKL, Bossque Skyline possesses a recognised government procurement working certificate from the Construction Industry Development Board.

It is also said that the company possesses a Bumiputera Standard Work certificate for Grade 2 Category B (Building Construction), grade G2 category CE (Civil Engineering Construction) and grade G2 (Mechanical and Electrical) - which allows the company to carry out the offered work.

DBKL’s statement comes a day after concerns were raised on Bossque Skyline, a clothing company, which was awarded a contract to repair the faulty escalator.

In a Companies Commission of Malaysia report, Bossque Skyline Sdn Bhd was incorporated in 2017 and was involved in the “retail sale of articles of clothing and clothing accessories”.

This left many quizzical over how a retail clothing company was given such a contract.

The reported escalators are among a host of other faulty facilities in train stations across the Klang Valley.

This includes under-maintenance escalators at the KL Sentral MRT station, Cochrane MRT station, Taman Tun Dr Ismail MRT station, and KLCC LRT station, among others. - Mkini
