PETALING JAYA: Umno’s Zahidi Zainul Abidin has accused Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin of destabilising the current government by meeting with DAP leaders.
Zahidi, who is the deputy communications and multimedia minister, said the next general election (GE15) must be held soon to address the political instability in the country.
“Muhyiddin should not have held a meeting with DAP as Bersatu is currently one of the parties that form the government.
“The government cannot be stable if the leaders of parties that form the administration hold discussions with the opposition,” Sinar Harian quoted him as saying.
“If the government is stable, the issues within the country and the concerns of the rakyat can be resolved quickly,” said Zahidi, who is a member of Umno’s Supreme Council.
He said it would be ideal to hold GE15 this year, maintaining that holding elections sooner had nothing to do with the court cases of prominent Umno leaders.
“Umno has never interfered in matters pending in the court. It is up to the court to decide if those charged are guilty or not.”
The current Ismail Sabri Yaakob-led government is made up of Barisan Nasional, the Bersatu-led Perikatan Nasional (PN), Gabungan Parti Sarawak, and Parti Bersatu Sabah. It is also backed by Parti Bangsa Malaysia and independent MPs.
Last month, it was reported that Pakatan Harapan and PN held discussions on the possibility of cooperating ahead of GE15.
Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim confirmed the meeting, adding that it was only to discuss a proposal mooted by Muhyiddin, the Bersatu president and PN chairman. - FMT
