Padang Rengas MP Nazri Abdul Aziz believed that it was disrespectful for some Umno leaders to keep pressuring Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob for an early election.
Speaking to Sinar Harian, Nazri said the decision to dissolve Parliament lies with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Hence, discussing the next election date was improper because it involves the powers of the Agong, he said.
"I was a cabinet minister for more than 10 years. The previous prime ministers never discussed the election date in the cabinet. That was because they respected the powers of the Agong and the Conference of Malay Rulers.
"Now, we are hearing this being discussed openly by (certain) Umno leaders. To me, if any Umno leaders want a snap election, seek an audience with His Majesty and then inform the prime minister of the outcome... if you are brave enough," Nazri added.
Following BN's triumphant performance in the Johor state election in March, several Umno leaders have urged Ismail Sabri to hold the general election soon to ride on BN's current momentum.
The current term of Parliament expires on July 16, 2023.
During the 48th BN convention on June 1, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged the thousands in attendance at Dewan Merdeka in PWTC, Kuala Lumpur to stand up to show support for an early election.
Apart from Nazri, other prominent Umno figures who are against holding an election soon are Annuar Musa and Khairy Jamaluddin.
Annuar questioned if BN was truly ready for an election at the national level while Khairy argued that BN would do better in the polls when the Covid-19 pandemic situation subsides further and the economy recovers. - Mkini
