Proposal to bar accused MPs still tentative, says PM

A proposal to bar accused MPs has yet to be discussed by the Cabinet, says Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

PETALING JAYA: A proposal to bar MPs who have been charged in court from attending parliamentary sittings is still tentative and has yet to be discussed by the Cabinet, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.

“It’s still too early. We haven’t discussed it in detail yet,” he told reporters when asked about the issue today.

Asked if it would be brought up at the next Cabinet meeting, he said: “Not yet. The law minister (Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar) just proposed it last week, and we said we will look into it in detail.”

Ismail, a lawyer by training, also declined to give his personal view on the matter. “It cannot be my point of view (alone),” he said. “The Cabinet means all ministers. We will discuss this in detail in the Cabinet.”

On Friday, Wan Junaidi said proposed amendments to the Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act could result in accused MPs being barred from attending parliamentary sittings.

A report in The Star quoted Wan Junaidi as saying that the amendment will involve barring and suspending such MPs, but the proposal was being fine-tuned to adapt the latest and existing rules of the Dewan Rakyat. - FMT
