Reveal subsidy removal plan in 24 hours or quit, PH tells ministers

Pakatan Harapan says there is less than a week before chicken ceiling prices and cooking oil subsidies are removed.

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan (PH) has urged the government to reveal its plans for targeted subsidies and tackling the rising cost of living within 24 hours.

Its presidential council said if Putrajaya failed to disclose its plans by tomorrow, the ministers in charge of these matters should resign.

Yesterday, the government announced that the ceiling prices for chicken and eggs will be removed from July 1, along with subsidies for 2kg, 3kg and 5kg bottled cooking oil.

“However, the government has not announced any mechanism, fund or timeline for the implementation of targeted subsidies though there is less than a week before the removal of the subsidies and price ceiling controls,” the council said in a statement.

It warned that this would give Malaysians insufficient time to prepare for the looming rise in cost of living, which could increase exponentially with the removal of the chicken and chicken eggs price ceilings and cooking oil subsidy.

“This is neither proactive nor responsible,” it said, adding that opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim had repeatedly raised concerns over the National Action Council on Cost of Living’s slow action in the Dewan Rakyat.

Yesterday, domestic trade and consumer affairs minister Alexander Nanta Linggi said the price of chicken was expected to be between RM10 and RM12 per kg once the ceiling price was removed after June 30.

Currently, chicken is capped at RM8.90 per kg. However, cooking oil sold in 1kg polybags will still be subsidised, selling at RM2.50 each. - FMT
