Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan has swiped at Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor for claiming that the party is pushing for an early general election (GE) because its president was afraid of being jailed.
Shahril also questioned what an early GE had to do with the court case faced by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Describing Sanusi’s statement as a serious accusation, he asked what Sanusi was trying to say would happen if the GE takes place and BN wins?
“That because BN won, suddenly the judges will be forced to change their minds?
“If that is the accusation, just mention it without hiding because the accusation is very serious. Not against Zahid but against the integrity of judges and the country’s judiciary,” he said in a media statement today.
It follows Sanusi’s statement claiming that Zahid, who is currently facing a corruption trial, insisted on holding the GE earlier for fear of being imprisoned.
“He is afraid of going to jail if the GE is late. His lifeline to avoid going to jail is just to try to seize power to ensure that the court cluster can be saved from punishment through the intervention of the new government,” said the Kedah menteri besar yesterday.
Zahid is facing 27 charges of money laundering by engaging in direct transactions involving income from illegal activities between March 29, 2016, and April 11, 2018.
‘GE15 win not guaranteed’
Shahril said Zahid did not demand that the GE be held immediately but only asked that it not be too late due to strategic considerations for the party and the country.
“As Umno president and BN chairperson, he wants the party to win and wants Malaysia to benefit from a more stable political situation without the question of the GE overshadowing.
“Other parties do not need to interfere in Umno’s internal discussions,” he explained.
He added that the current prime minister, Ismail Sabri Yaakob, is from Umno and the party’s supreme council had already decided to retain him if BN wins GE15.
“The case is still ongoing. So what has the early GE got to do with the court case?
“In addition, there is no guarantee that BN will win the GE. The voices waiting for the GE and the new mandate are among the party members and the people who have no court cases,” claimed Shahril. - Mkini
