USM appoints committee to probe allegations of medical exam leaks

Penang public higher education institution Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) will review its examination system amid questions of integrity at the university’s medical faculty.

USM vice-chancellor Prof Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan said a special committee comprising external experts has been formed to scrutinise the examination process for each candidate.

"The committee is comprised of experts and professionals in the field, coming from various institutions," he said in a statement issued yesterday.

Retired professor Omar Shawkataly on Tuesday (June 21) urged USM to probe claims of integrity breaches at the USM medical faculty.

This was after a postgraduate medical student complained of favouritism, bullying, discrimination, and the leaking of examination questions to favoured students.

Faisal Rafiq said this committee was established as a result of a complaint made by a Master’s candidate in the USM medical programme.

The complaint was about unfairness in the evaluation system, which led to the candidate failing the examination.

He added that the university has conducted an internal inquiry on this matter and discovered that the examination system has been regulated by strict procedures, with external experts, and not by a sole lecturer.

“Following the announcement of examination results, candidates will be notified for them to provide feedback regarding which component of the examination requires revision if any.

"Nevertheless, in order to uphold the integrity and to safeguard the good name of the university, USM has even established an external committee to really ensure that the system and the process both are truly upright, and conducted with integrity and credibility.

"This matter also needs to be looked into, so as to convince all parties that the university always upholds the examination process and system and ensures that they deliver the level of expertise and professionalism demanded of the said field," Faisal Rafiq said.

The committee will provide a report to the university as soon as possible, he added. - Mkini
