Wee hits back at union over criticism of train service

The Railwaymen’s Union of Malaya had claimed that the train sets bought by the transport ministry through direct negotiations were of poor quality.

SUBANG: Transport minister Wee Ka Siong has slammed the Railwaymen’s Union of Malaya (RUM) over its claim that Keretapi Tanah Melayu’s (KTM) poor service is due to the train sets the ministry purchased through direct negotiations.

“Don’t make wild allegations. They (RUM) need to check their facts before making such accusations,” said Wee at a press conference today.

He said procurements made by the ministry underwent a stringent process, and that any direct negotiation would be overseen by a committee.

Any purchase of new train sets followed specifications set by the ministry, he said.

Earlier today, the union blamed the ministry for problems faced by KTM’s train service.

Its president, Abdul Razak Md Hassan, told FMT the ministry was interfering with the operations of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB).

He claimed that the train sets bought by the ministry through direct negotiations were of poor quality.

He also said the ministry had not been transparent about projects involving the train service and KTMB’s efforts to improve railway facilities, including Phase 2 of the Klang Valley Dual Tracking project (KVDT2). - FMT
