Workers denied RM1.5k base pay must set off wave of action - Syed Saddiq

Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has urged workers who were denied the new RM1,500 minimum wage to take action.

He said they must lodge complaints with the Human Resources Ministry and demand they are paid according to the law.

“This is your right, you have to demand it. If you’re not brave, others will also not be brave.

“That is why there must be a wave (of complaints lodged to the ministry),” he said in a social media video shot in Muar, Johor today.

The minimum wage was increased from RM1,200 to RM1,500 effective May 1.

However, Jaringan Pekerja Kontrak Kerajaan (JPKK) alleged yesterday that many contract cleaners and security guards in government schools have yet to receive their RM1,500 minimum wage salaries.

They said employers cited reasons such as the contracts between them and the government were still based on the old minimum wage.

Syed Saddiq said workers who complained to him were also given the same excuse by their employers.

Other employers, he said, claimed they didn’t have to follow the government mandate.

Govt must be proactive

Only microenterprises with annual sales turnover of below RM300,000 and employing no more than five full-time workers are exempted from the new minimum wage.

Besides the workers lodging complaints, Syed Saddiq said the government must also be proactive to adjust contracts with companies it had engaged for security and cleaning services to reflect the new minimum wage.

As for employers, the Muar MP warned that increasing the minimum wage must not be offset by cutting allowances.

He said the companies also have no reason to offset costs by sacking employees.

He argued that better wages will lead to better productivity.

Syed Saddiq said that on a whole, Malaysia's wage to GDP ratio is at 20-25 percent, or 20-25 sen per RM1, compared to 40-45 percent in developed countries. - Mkini
