PARLIAMENT | Energy and Natural Resources Minister Takiyuddin Hassan has said a comprehensive report on the recent floods in Baling, Kedah will be prepared by August 4.
Takiyuddin (PAS-Kota Bharu) revealed this in the Dewan Rakyat today, in response to a question by Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim (BN-Baling).
Azeez asked what solutions were being planned by the ministry to ensure the safety of the public, particularly residents around Gunung Inas in Baling following the floods there.
He warned that the surrounding area of the mountain remains vulnerable to landslides and other natural disasters.
Takiyuddin (above) responded that initial investigations revealed the surrounding area was indeed still unstable.
“The Energy and Natural Resources Ministry’s initial investigation through the Minerals and Geosciences department found that the surrounding area of Gunung Inas, Kupang, Baling is still unstable and vulnerable to the threat of landslides and rock falls due to the presence of loose rock blocks hanging on the mountainside,” he said.
It was previously announced that the ministry is taking on the lead role in investigating the recent floods at Baling.
Takiyuddin said his ministry received the instruction from the Prime Minister’s Office through the office of the Chief Secretary to the government.
The ministry assured that the investigative report on the area is currently being prepared and will be ready by Aug 4.
The team investigating the floods includes the Environment and Water Ministry; Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministry; Minerals and Geosciences Department; Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia; Irrigation and Drainage Department, the National Water Research Institute Malaysia (Nahrim) and others.
Meanwhile, Takiyuddin said an official letter on public safety measures at the Gunung Inas catchment area was sent by his ministry to the Kedah state government.
The letter, he said, contained warnings to the state government to pay attention to certain danger zones.
The Baling floods, which occurred on July 4, affected 41 areas and took the lives of three, including a pregnant 23-year-old. - Mkini
