Pahang regent 'asks' cops to leave vocal activist alone

Pahang regent Tengku Hassanal Sultan Abdullah has "asked" the police to drop its probe against the head of Malaysian Nature Society's Pahang chapter.

Tengku Hassanal wrote on his Instagram page today that upon finding out that Noor Jehan Abu Bakar was being probed for her tweet, he reached out to the police.

"I just found out about this. I have asked the police to leave her alone. Please don't create drama," wrote Tengku Hassanal.

On July 18, Noor Jehan tweeted that Tengku Hassanal was two hours late for an official event in Terengganu on that day.

This led to online backlash along with accusations that she was insulting the regent.

In a separate Instagram post today, Tengku Hassanal explained that he was late for the event because he wasn't feeling well.

"My sincere apologies for being late for the event.

"I was not feeling well that morning and had to take (a) few precautions for everyone's safety.

"I really appreciate your time and concern. Thank you," he said.

‘I like the graphics’

Separately, Tengku Hassanal also urged the public not to report graphic artist Fahmi Reza's latest satirical artwork to the police.

"No need police report. I actually like the graphics," the regent wrote.

Fahmi's latest piece featured a person in a tengkolok headgear performing push-ups against a yellow background with the caption "Push-up 4 tasik chini".

This was likely a reference to Tengku Hassanal's "Push up for environment challenge" social media campaign last year in which he posted a video of himself exercising.

The Tasik Chini likely referred to the environmental problems faced at Malaysia's second biggest natural freshwater lake.

United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) periodic review concluded last year that Tasik Chini no longer met its criteria to be classified as a biosphere reserve.

In June last year, Tengku Hassanal's intervention compelled the Pahang government to stop mining and forest clearing in the Tasik Chini vicinity. - Mkini
