Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari has justified the RM787 million budgeted to upgrade the Shah Alam Sports Complex.
He also clarified that the project is to upgrade the stadium and sports complex, and not to completely demolish and rebuild as widely perceived by the public.
Amirudin added that the works will include upgrades to the Malawati Indoor Stadium.
"Many thought the RM787 million was to build a new stadium; this is not true.
"There are also those who question why such a big sum is needed to repair the stadium.
"This is because it includes the cost of raising the entire stadium platform by 1.5 metres to avoid recurrence of flooding and the cost of rewiring, changing the roof structure and demolishing the existing roof structure," he said.
Stadium in bad shape
Amirudin pointed out that the Shah Alam Stadium is in bad shape after flooding in the state capital in 2006, 2015 and 2021.
He said the state had spent RM56 million repairing the roof, changing rooms, wiring and drainage as a result, since 2013.
The menteri besar said the decision to upgrade the stadium was taken due to the rising cost of repairs.
"The upgrade also does not involve state funds and will focus on green technology to give the Shah Alam Stadium a new image.
"This is a new era and historical moment for all Selangor residents," Amirudin added.
Earlier, Selangor Umno liaison chief Noh Omar said the Selangor government had poorly managed the stadium since BN fell in the state in 2008.
"Be it rebuilding and demolishing or transferring the management to a private party, this shows the state government is unable to manage the stadium and this is a failure on their part.
"If they can't even manage a stadium, how can they manage the country?" he reportedly asked. - Mkini
