PETALING JAYA: An Islamic NGO has urged the government to prevent all the leakages and corruption affecting the nation’s coffers.
Pertubuhan Ikram Malaysia (Ikram) said issues such as the rising cost of living, food security and the need to increase the overnight policy rates (OPR), were indicative of weaknesses in the country’s economic system.
“The government must ensure that all forms of assistance and incentives for the rakyat reach the target groups and are not misappropriated. This can be done by increasing the efficiency of the delivery system.
“Putrajaya must also enhance its oversight of the country’s financial management to eradicate leakages and corruption,” Ikram economic prosperity cluster head Abdul Hamid said in a statement.
Abdul added that a thorough discussion on the economy was needed at the next Dewan Rakyat sitting later this month.
“The government must be mindful of the wellbeing of the rakyat during these turbulent times.
“Ikram also encourages the government to consider the implementation of an Islamic gift economy, a charity based, systemic approach capable of achieving sustainable and resilient economic prosperity,” he said.
Abdul added that technological innovations and scientific advances should also be fully utilised to bring added value to the country’s economy. - FMT
