Floods: Dos and don’ts while driving

PETALING JAYA: Never attempt to drive your vehicles through floodwaters, the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) has advised.

Its disaster management and operations director Col (PA) Sharudin Md Zain said motorists braving floodwaters would endanger not only themselves but also possibly cause their vehicles to be swept away with the currents.

“Never ever traverse floodwaters with your vehicles especially when you are unsure of how deep the waters are.

“The best course of action is to stay put but if left with no choice, make sure of the depth of the waters before attempting to drive through.

“It is also best to monitor whether the water is stagnant or running before attempting any movement, as the current of running waters can seem slow but are almost always stronger than it seems,” he told The Star.

He also advised residents in flood hotspots to stay updated with weather forecasts while also preparing a bag of necessities to ease the evacuation process, if needed.

“Residents in flood-prone areas are usually prepared with their evacuation bags (which comprise important documents along with house and vehicle keys), but it is also recommended to pack some spare clothes and simple foods as well,” he said.

When cleaning homes (after floods), Sharudin said the public should be wary of electrical lines both near and in floodwaters.

“Remove them from the area using insulators such as wood to reduce the risk of any unwanted situations.

“If you encounter wild animals, stay away from them as a safety precaution,” he said.

He also advised residents in flood hotspots to be mentally and emotionally prepared for the possibility of floods.

“Be ready to act before any bigger dangers come.

“Always remain calm, pay attention to your surroundings and if you hear any emergency sirens, prepare to evacuate.

“Make sure to call 999 if left in any drastic situations as well,” he said. - Star
