PAS to 'wait and see' over plans to form PN govt - Hadi

PAS is taking a "wait and see" approach before pursuing any purported plans to install Perikatan Nasional (PN) as the new federal government replacing the current administration led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said his party will first evaluate Anwar's leadership and reactions from the people.

"We are looking at the current developments, what actions are the government taking, and we're waiting to see the public reaction towards the present government.

"The government that I'm looking at... I don't even know what name to call them," said the Marang MP when met after having his statement recorded at the Sentul district police station in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

He said this when asked for comments on Arau MP Shahidan Kassim's statement yesterday alleging ongoing attempts to ensure that PN will form the next government.

Shahidan, while on the Padang Serai by-election campaign trail yesterday, reportedly said plans are underway to ensure that Anwar's cabinet will not last long and PN - with PAS holding the most number of Parliament seats as an individual party - will assume federal power.

When asked whether PN is working to become the government, however, Hadi said there are no such plans at least in the near term.

“At least until the next election. We will further the influence that we have now,” he said.

The present government led by Anwar comprises Pakatan Harapan, BN, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, and others.

Based on this, there are 148 MPs backing Anwar’s premiership, meaning that he has a supermajority in Parliament.

Meanwhile, asked about the dates of elections for PAS-controlled states, Hadi said the matter is up to the menteris besar of the respective states to decide. - Mkini
