PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki says all parties should avoid politicising the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the five political coalitions in the unity government.

He said the MoU was meant to ensure the country’s stability for the next five years.

“So, enough with the politicising and polemics.

“Focus on what lies ahead for the sake of the nation and resolve the various issues affecting the people.

“Five years from now, you can return to contest in the next general election,” he said in a Facebook post.

Asyraf said the MoU was also signed to ensure there would be no more “buying and selling schemes” among MPs, which could potentially cause repeated changes in government.

“The MoU is to ensure all parties in the unity government respect each other’s policies and orientations, while never broaching sensitive subjects that could harm the harmony of the agreement.”

He added that the MoU would allow the government to give its full attention to reviving the economy and helping the people.

Earlier today, Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin criticised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s signing of the MoU, stating that the latter did so as he was not very confident of the support he has among MPs.

Muhyiddin said MPs should be free to vote as they liked and should not be forced to toe the line.

Yesterday, the five coalitions in the unity government, namely Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Warisan, jointly signed the MoU to guarantee political stability and drive the economy.

The MoU will ensure that all MPs in the unity government support Anwar and his administration in any confidence motions or bills in the Dewan Rakyat.

Any MP who fails to toe the line set by the party and votes against the prime minister or the government will be deemed to have resigned as an MP. - FMT
