Teachers of Chinese primary school in landslide

Education minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry is trying to find out if other schoolchildren were victims of the landslide.

KUALA LUMPUR: Teachers and pupils of Mun Choong primary school were among those affected by the landslide in Batang Kali, Selangor, early today, education minister Fadhlina Sidek said.

The group was a private visit, she said. “It may have been on a family trip or among friends, we are not sure yet. We are still trying to get the facts regarding their trip there,” she told reporters at Sungai Buloh Hospital, where bodies of victims have been taken for autopsy.

Separtely, the Parent-Teacher Association of Mun Choong primary school, in Kampung Batu, Jalan Ipoh, Kuala Lumpur, said about 20 teachers of the school and their family members had camped at Farmer’s Organic Farm, where the landslide took place.

Fadhlina said the education ministry was trying to determine if other schoolchildren were victims of the incident.

She said the ministry was ready to provide financial assistance and psychosocial service to teachers and pupils as well as the next-of-kin involved in the incident.
She also urged the public to respect the privacy of next of kin of victims.

The landslide, which took place at 2am, has caused 21 deaths so far with 12 others still reported missing, while 61 were saved. - FMT
