PARLIAMENT | Putrajaya does not plan to sign the Artemis Accords, which is an agreement for countries participating in a new moon mission, for now, the Dewan Rakyat was told.
Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said Malaysia is still studying the financial implications and benefits of being a signatory of the Artemis Accords or similar programmes.
He said the country also needs to prepare legislation and enforcement mechanisms to regulate domestic space exploration to comply with international obligations.
“For now, Malaysia’s participation in the Artemis Accords or other similar initiatives is still under consideration. Our ministry will consider Malaysia’s eligibility based on the country’s preparedness when our space legislations are updated,” he said.
Chang said this in a written reply to Tan Kok Wai (Pakatan Harapan-Cheras) who asked if the US invited Malaysia to join the Artemis programme and what was Malaysia’s position on the matter.
According to Chang, US National Space Agency (Nasa) extended the invitation through the Asean secretariat on July 26, 2022.
So far, 23 countries and one territory have signed the Artemis Accords - a series of agreements aimed at establishing a governing framework for exploring the moon.
Neighbouring Singapore and South Korea are among the signatories. - Mkini
