KUALA LUMPUR: Fears of more rate hikes and less favourable economic data in the US sent both Bursa Malaysia and the ringgit into negative territory today.
The local bourse reacted badly to a slide on Wall Street overnight on fears that the US Federal Reserve will raise the interest rate further.
Within the first five minutes of the trading day, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) had lost almost seven points.
On the broader market, losers outnumbered gainers three to one.
Meanwhile, the greenback strengthened further on expectations that the US non-farm payrolls (NFP) would come down in February after a surge the month before.
The data is due to be released later today.
The ringgit began the day at 4.5200/4.5245 versus the US dollar, down from yesterday’s close of 4.5170/4.5200. - FMT
