Cops probing women’s march under PAA

The police have opened an investigation paper on the Women’s March 2023, which was held in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

Dang Wangi police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya said the assembly held in front of the Sogo Complex and Dataran Merdeka is being investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and the Minor Offences Act 1955.

“Around 150 individuals, including NGO activists, students and political party members joined the rally with ‘Imagine if men are as disgusted with rape as with periods’, ‘Child not bride’, ‘Transwomen are women’, ‘Police your behaviour not my body’ placards in their hands.

“All identified individuals at the rally will be called to the Dang Wangi police headquarters for their statements to be recorded in the near future to facilitate with the probe,” he said in a statement this evening.

Noor Dellhan added that the investigation paper will be completed and forwarded to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

He had also urged the public not to partake in assemblies that do not abide by the law and that action can be taken against those who are involved.

According to a statement by the organising committee of Women’s March Malaysia, it said the march aimed to bring people together to call for gender equality, justice and an end to all forms of discrimination against women and girls.

The march demanded, among others, for child marriages to be banned as soon as possible, for the government to protect bodily autonomy and the freedom of choice, to enact constitutional and legislative reform to achieve gender equality, for equal political participation of oppressed genders at all levels of governance and to ensure decent work standards and living wage. - Mkini
