Electrocution or not? Vinosiny's death still a mystery - family lawyer

The cause of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) student S Vinosiny's death is still shrouded in mystery despite the police attributing it to electrocution, her family lawyer said.

According to M Manoharan, this is because a report from the Energy Commission (northern region) to his office has said that no electrocution was involved in the incident.

"The commission in its report to us has said that Vinosiny did not die of electrocution.

"Then how and why did the police and UUM convince the family and the public that it was electrocution?" Manoharan told Malaysiakini today.

He noted that last month, the Coroner's Court in Alor Setar ruled that the 20-year-old had died of electrocution.

The police also confirmed the same, citing the post-mortem report done on the deceased.

M Manoharan

Manoharan reiterated doubts about the "official" version, noting that the inquest into Vinosiny's death was done without the family’s knowledge.

"It is puzzling why the police and the public prosecutor's office are refusing to disclose all relevant documents to me as the family's solicitor.

"Letters were sent to all relevant authorities but to no avail. The Coroner’s Court said that the documents have been returned to the state legal department, and the state legal department said it is with the police, but the police are now refusing to cooperate and disclose the documents forwarded to the coroner."

Family denied justice

Manoharan further alleged that the police and UUM were trying to deny the family justice in the matter.

"This calls for huge general damages, plus aggravated damages and exemplary damages against the police, UUM, the AG's Chambers, and the pathologist as well.

"The coroner’s decision without a proper hearing and not calling parties to assist in determining the cause of death is disheartening. Now, all kinds of contradictory expert reports have emerged.

"We really don’t know who is telling the truth and who is lying," he said. - Mkini
