PARLIAMENT | Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that there are MPs from the government bloc who are currently being investigated for corruption.
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat today, Anwar revealed that there are probes against lawmakers from both sides of the political divide.
However, he said he did not have any specific knowledge of the investigations.
“I know there are investigations involving those in the opposition and the government but I don’t know their positions.
“I only asked the enforcement agencies and they confirmed that there are investigations.
“Whether the prosecution is made or not, that is up to the enforcement body which is the Attorney-General’s Chambers,” Anwar said during the Prime Minister’s Question Time today.
He was responding to Siti Zailah Mohd Yussof (Perikatan Nasional-Rantau Panjang) who asked whether there have been graft probes into lawmakers from the government bloc.
In a supplementary question, Siti also queried if there are investigations into the source of funds of the government’s component parties so that there are no disputes or claims of selective prosecution.
In response, Anwar said he is open to the authorities to launch investigations into PKR if there are quarters who are concerned about the possibility of corruption in donations to the party.
“But we have to understand the law, it allows donations to political parties.
“From a legal point of view, there are no contradictions for anyone to donate to a political party.
“But what was linked in the previous prosecution is a question of (personal) interest or the element of corruption because those who obtained the contracts provided funds to themselves, their companies or (political) parties associated with them,” Anwar explained.
Previously, DAP’s Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong alleged that former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin had awarded the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) contract to his son-in-law, Adlan Berhan.
According to a report by The Vibes, Adlan was a key player in the RM1.2 billion NIISe concession through links in one of the project's front-runners, security solutions provider S5 Holdings Inc.
However, S5 group managing director Syed Mohammad Hafiz Jamalullail said in 2021 that none of his political connections, including Adlan, was involved in the company. Mkini
