Hamzah: Bersatu leadership rejects Muhyiddin’s resignation

The Bersatu supreme council has unanimously rejected the resignation of party president Muhyiddin Yassin.

Secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said the decision was made because Muhyiddin was being charged as Bersatu president and not in his personal capacity.

“The supreme council unanimously rejected the resignation of Muhyiddin as president of the party.

“This is because we find that the charges against Muhyiddin were made against his office as Bersatu president rather than in his personal capacity.

“The leadership requests all members and supporters to be patient and calm as we face this big test,” said Hamzah (above), going on to claim that the party was facing slander and cruelty.

Yesterday Muhyiddin claimed trial to four counts of abuse of power and two money laundering charges involving RM232.5 million.

He faces 20 years in jail and a fine five times the amount of gratification involved or RM10,000 whichever is higher for the abuse of power charges.

For the money laundering case, he may be sentenced to imprisonment of 15 years and fined five times the amount involved or RM5 million, whichever is higher.

The Pagoh MP claimed that the charges against him were "prematurely" framed by the authorities before the investigations were even completed, alluding that the government was merely using enforcement agencies as a tool for political purposes.

However, he then said he left it up to the Bersatu supreme council to determine whether he will continue to hold the position of party president.
