Woman barred entry to SSM office over ‘short’ dress

Khor Hooi Chin is seen trying to reason with the Ipoh SSM employee who insisted she adhere to the dress code provided.

PETALING JAYA: A woman was barred from entering the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) office in Ipoh over her attire in the latest incident of a civil servant enforcing the dress code guidelines.

In a video that was uploaded on social media, Khor Hooi Chin claimed she had been denied entry by an employee at the SSM office because she wore a dress with a hemline that was not below the knee.

Khor, in the video clip, could be heard asking the SSM staff what was “offensive” about her dress and complained that the guidelines were “too strict”.

The employee then told her that she can raise the matter with his superior, to which Khor replied that she was not even allowed to enter the building.

The employee then repeatedly reminded her that her attire did not comply with the dress code guidelines which were displayed at the entrance.

“If you follow the rule, we will let you in. No problem,” he said.

Khor later told The Star that her dress was considered “office wear and there was nothing provocative about it”.

“I travelled this far and wasted an entire day trying to get my work done,” she was quoted as saying.

On Feb 16, it was reported that a 60-year-old woman was barred from using the elevator at the Pasir Gudang City Council office after a security guard had deemed her attire “inappropriate”.

In January, a woman who wanted to lodge a police report following a car accident was denied entry into the Kajang station because she was “wearing shorts”. - FMT
