A PKR Youth leader has urged the government to include the history of Orang Asli in the national education syllabus to minimise discrimination towards the natives.
In making the call, Johor PKR Youth information chief Mazerol Way Ah Lon said he has received a "significant" number of complaints from Orang Asli youth about the discrimination they faced in school.
"Our friends (the Orang Asli) complained about how some of their youths were mocked in school.
"This is because students experience 'culture shock' when they deal with Orang Asli at school," Mazerol told a press conference in Petaling Jaya today.
Lack of awareness among the locals regarding the existence and significance of the Orang Asli in the country is the cause of this, he added.
"Since the history of Orang Asli is not taught in school, many are unaware of the natives' existence.
"Even in Johor, I get a lot of 'Eh, is there Orang Asli?" he quipped.
The alleged marginalisation leads to Orang Asli youth being left behind from their peers in school, and later in higher education, Mazerol further lamented.
Also present at the press conference were PKR Youth vice-chief Atyrah Hanim Razali, and the party's Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung.
According to Atyrah, PKR Youth is committed to bringing the voice of marginalised young people and aligning them with the coalition government's goals. - Mkini
