State polls: PN to contest all 245 seats, PAS gets the most - Muhyiddin

Perikatan Nasional will contest all 245 seats up for grabs in the upcoming six state elections.

Its chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin, who earlier chaired the coalition's presidential council meeting, said PAS will be contesting the bulk of it at 126 seats, followed by Bersatu (83) and Gerakan (36).

"The seat negotiations were carried out smoothly, there were no disagreements that could have led to any problems.

"We were able to finalise the discussions ahead of the Election Commission's announcement on the polling date," the Bersatu president said at a press conference at PN headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

Also present were PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Gerakan president Dominic Lau, as well as other top PN leaders.

Of the number of seats contested, Muhyiddin said Bersatu has the largest number of non-incumbent seats, not currently held by a PN component.

He said Bersatu will field 64 candidates in a non-incumbent seat, PAS in 50 out of its 126 seats, while Gerakan has zero incumbents after failing to win any seats in the last 14th general election as part of BN.

On PN's candidates, Muhyiddin said their names have been finalised by each party but further announcements will likely be made at the state levels.

"If I were to announce one by one (now) there are too many of them.

"The announcements will be made at the state level so that members in each state can make the necessary preparations," the former prime minister said.

‘Anyone can be poster boys’

Quizzed on PN's “poster boys” in the states, commonly seen as a sign of potential candidates for the menteri besar or chief minister posts, Muhyiddin said the matter was not discussed in today's meeting.

"When the time comes, then people will know, or in certain places, anyone from PAS, Bersatu and Gerakan can be ‘poster boys’," the Pagoh MP said.

Further, Muhyiddin confirmed that all PN candidates in Kelantan and Terengganu will contest under PAS' logo, while others in the remaining four states - Kedah, Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan - will be fielded under the coalition's logo. - Mkini
