Teaching parents to keep young kids off TikTok

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil is concerned that children under 13 will gain access to social media platforms like TikTok.
PUTRAJAYA: The communications ministry is planning to work with the education ministry to organise a tour targeting children and the safe use of social media, especially TikTok, minister Fahmi Fadzil said.

He added that he has been in touch with education minister Fadhlina Sidek’s office about the subject, Bernama reported.

“We hope to cooperate with several stakeholders to work on a roadshow to raise awareness for parent-teacher associations, teachers and students.

“Those in Standard One to Six cannot have TikTok accounts, as this actually violates the basic common guideline for the platform.

“Nowadays many parents do not notice this basic age limit, (so) I urge that children below 13 not be given TikTok accounts as there are some things that are not good. There is a worry about the algorithm,” he said here today.

He added that social media influencers use satire and parody that children may have difficulty interpreting.
