PETALING JAYA
Police are to summon staff of a private hospital along with other parties in an investigation into the death of an infant and the handling of the child’s remains.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said an investigation has been opened following a report lodged by a father today against a private hospital located in South Klang.

“We are investigating the case to see if there are any criminal elements. Those who are related will be summoned, including the private hospital,” Hussein said in a statement dated today.

The father, Safwan Roshdy, 22, was quoted in media reports earlier today as saying he would lodge a report against the hospital for allegedly mishandling his child’s remains.

Safwan’s lawyer, Ahmad Zaharil Muhaiyar, alleged that Hospital Bersalin Razif had wrongfully retained the infant’s body for 16 days over the father’s alleged failure to settle the medical bill.

The hospital has denied mishandling the baby’s remains or delaying the burial arrangements. It said on Wednesday that the mother had informed hospital staff that she could not afford the RM2,840 hospital bill.

However, the family was allowed to proceed with the burial while working out payment arrangements, the hospital said.

The case is also under investigation by the health ministry’s private medical practice control division. - FMT
