Viral video of worker cutting treads into worn lorry tyre raises concerns on road safety

WHAT should lorry drivers or owners do should they find that the tyres have lost their treads due to friction?

For some people, the solution could be as easy as cutting new grooves into the worn out surface as a form of “maintenance.”

But every car expert can tell why this is not a great idea, or for a better description, it is a fatal idea.

In a video post by netizen mhmmdhsm, a worker could be seen cutting new grooves into a well-worn lorry tyre to give it a semblance of grip.

Not only was the work painfully sloppy, the tyre would be downright dangerous should it be used by a lorry on the road.

Netizens were not amused by this operation to “renew” the tyre treads and have either condemned them or called for action to be taken.

Amer ‘Memer’ Kamal inquired if someone could provide the name of the account name for the video. “Should be easy for JPH or the authorities to do their work,” he said.

Another netizen in a strong-worded comment said these people are the reason why there are deaths on the road.

In a show of judgement, Abangjad hoped that the tyre would explode and harm the face and hands of those who did the work.

Others added that when there is a problem with the lorry tyre, sadly it is not the lorry driver who gets killed.

The comment section was also an illuminating place, with many netizens sharing their insights regarding the heavy transport industry.

Tsevras said lorry tyres were made regroovable and retreadable as they are expensive.

Supporting his claims was Rozairy Roslan who shared that people usually use such tyres as these are 50% cheaper.

“The treads were so ugly how did PUSPAKOM allow it?” said amir, having watched the clumsy retreading work.

Frighteningly, Black Mamba shared that there is a tyre rental service for any vehicle going for inspection.

“After passing, change back to the old tyre. This issue will not be solved as long as corruption is there. Our job is to fight corruption,” said Black Mamba. - Focus Malaysia
