GEORGE TOWN
There are no by-laws in Penang restricting owners from bringing their pets to the island’s beaches, says Penang Island mayor Rajendran Anthony.

Responding to a complaint on social media about three dogs which were brought to Tanjung Bungah beach, the mayor said owners are allowed to take their pets to beaches.

“There are no by-laws preventing pets on beaches… (but) we have by-laws prohibiting dogs in public parks. However, we can take action if a dog is not leashed and (is not) under its owner’s control,” he told FMT.

Rajendran also warned owners who fail to clean up after their pets that they can be fined for littering. Owners must also ensure they have a valid pet licence from the city council (MBPP), as the council can take action against strays.

A social media user named “Munis” had posted a comment about the dogs at Tanjung Bungah beach, arguing that dogs should not be allowed on the beach or to enter the sea as they might “carry diseases we don’t know about”. The Facebook user also said many Muslims frequent Tanjung Bungah beach. - FMT
