Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim previously said the haze and hot weather had pushed some households above the previous 600kWh threshold.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that under the revised measure, domestic consumers using up to 800kWh a month will be exempted from the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment (AFA), retail charges, and sales and service tax (SST).
“This move is being taken to address the current cost of living pressures faced by the rakyat,” he said in a statement.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, yesterday said the haze and hot weather in recent weeks had led to increased electricity consumption among households, pushing their usage above the 600kWh threshold and exposing them to AFA charges.
The AFA mechanism adjusts electricity generation fuel costs according to prevailing market prices and foreign exchange rates.
For September, the AFA rate is 3.67 sen per kWh, with fuel prices remaining above the baseline due to global factors.
The move comes a day after Anwar said the government would meet the Energy Commission and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) to discuss measures to ease the impact of higher electricity bills on households affected by increased power consumption.
Anwar today thanked TNB, the energy transition and water transformation ministry and the Energy Commission for helping to implement the measure swiftly.
He added that the government will continue to monitor fuel costs and energy market conditions closely to ensure future electricity tariff decisions balance affordability and the cost of living with electricity supply security and the sustainability of the country’s energy sector. - FMT
