New MyKad gets transparent window, dual-interface chip

The national registration department (JPN) has unveiled the new look for the upgraded MyKad, which includes a transparent window and a dual-interface chip on the back.

In a Facebook post, JPN said the new MyKad also features a dynamic security hologram and a QR code.

“Each of these forms part of the enhancements that make the new-generation MyKad more modern and strengthen it with the latest security features,” it said.

JPN’s website said the new MyKad is made from high-durability polycarbonate engineered to resist bending, snapping or cracking over extended daily use.

The new design also features intricate fine geometric line work, known as guilloche patterns, alongside rainbow printing that shifts colour tones depending on the viewing angle.

JPN added that personal details and profile photos are laser-etched directly into the core layers of the card, making any attempt to tamper with or scrape off the information impossible without destroying the card itself.

“A secondary, smaller laser-engraved portrait embedded within the card serves as primary protection against photo manipulation and identity theft,” it said.

A total of 40 JPN branches nationwide with on-site printing facilities are ready to issue the new-generation MyKad on the same day, while applications at branches without printing facilities will take five working days to process. - FMT
