Ahmad Sarbani 'tried to exit building via window'

Customs officer Ahmad Sarbani Mohamad fell to his death "while trying to leave via the window of the pantry on the third floor" of the Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office.

NONEAn inquest into his death heard this during testimony from DSP Shahrul Osman Mansur (left), who led the Bukit Aman forensics crime scene unit.

"In my opinion he was trying to leave the building through the window. If you are in the third floor pantry, it may seem that the roof of the badminton court below is not too far from the window," he said.

"But measurements show it is actually more than nine metres away."

Responding to questions from DPP Hanim Abdul Rashid, he posited that Ahmad Sarbani fell after trying to jump off the ledge below the window, onto the badminton court on Level 1.

The CSI officer also related how he revisited the MACC following his initial investigation. This was because rain on the day of the incident made investigations problematic.

His return trips involved further examination of the outside wall of the third floor pantry, which revealed the existence of stains and gouge marks below the window and on the outside ledge, believed to be connected with Ahmad Sarbani's fall.

He also re-inspected a a gouge mark on the inside ledge of the pantry window, believed to be made by the buckle of the Ahmad Sarbani's belt.

'Stuntman re-enacted Sarbani's fall'

The police officer also came to the scene of the incident one final time, for a re-enactment of the Customs officer's fall. He related how they hired a stuntman to try to re-create Ahmad Sarbani's fall, albeit with an inflated air-mattress for safety.

He said that during the experiment, the stuntman fell almost exactly where Ahmad Sarbani was found dead.

The officer also showed pictures of the scene and the re-enactment as he related his theory further.

Shahrul was the second witness at the inquest which began today before coroner Aizatul Akmal Maharani.

NONEAwtar Singh, who is representing Ahmad Sarbani's family, then requested for time to examine the evidence and crime scene reports adduced.

The inquest will continue tomorrow, with a visit to the scene of death.

On April 6, Ahmad Sarbani (left) was found dead on the badminton court, which is on Level 1 of the building on Jalan Cochrane.

He had gone to the KL MACC in connection with a probe, for which his statement had been recorded earlier. - Malaysiakini
